RAPIGEL granules absorb water at a very fast rate resulting in enormous increase in the volume of particles, which develops internal pressure in the tablet causing rapid disintegration and fast dissolution of active ingredients of tablet. RAPIGEL after absorption of water, forms gel which is insoluble in water. It causes very uniform disintegration and the effectiveness does not change even after prolonged storage.

Sodium starch glycolate is manufactured by carboxymethylation of starch. The carboxymethylation process increases the ability of the starch to absorb water, making it a rapid disintegrant. Sodium starch glycolate is used as a disintegrant in capsule and tablet formulations. It is recommended to use in tablets prepared by either direct-compression or wet-granulation processes. Sodium starch glycolate has also been investigated for use as a suspending vehicle.

Tablets prepared with sodium starch glycolate have good storage properties. Sodium starch glycolate is stable although very hygroscopic, and should be stored in a well-closed container in order to protect it from wide variations of humidity and temperature, which may cause caking.
